Antonin
Dvorak
Not
all Artistic Lemonade comes from artists who live tortured lives. Antonin
Dvorak had a strong Catholic faith, was faithful to his wife, and knew
success as a composer: a happier existence than many artists. Like everyone,
though, Dvorak’s life had its share of metaphorical lemons. The best
known example of Artistic Lemonade in Dvorak’s work is the song
cycle Cypresses,
which he composed out of his unrequited love for Josefina Cermakova. Although
Josefina refused him and Dvorak eventually married her sister Anna, thoughts
of what his life with Josefina could have been stayed with him throughout
his life. By exploring those thoughts and emotions through music, he found
a way to create something beautiful from a personal experience that haunted
him.
