Vincent Van Gogh

“A good picture is equivalent to a good deed.”
– Vincent Van Gogh

In his brief career, Vincent Van Gogh explored his view of the world and his own mental and emotional struggles through art. He actively sought to bring joy to others through his work, though there was little joy in his own life. In his 37 years, the artist had several failed careers and failed romances. He struggled with mental illness (ultimately committing suicide) and sold only one painting during his lifetime.Although Van Gogh himself believed that his life was not “calm enough” to allow him to develop fully as an artist, many critics believe that the turmoil in his life helped create the boldness and passion of his paintings. The artist’s struggles influenced his creation of great works of art that have touched the lives of millions of people. In Vincent Van Gogh’s own words: ”I believe these paintings say what words cannot. ”

“And my aim in my life is to make pictures and drawings, as many and as well as I can; then, at the end of my life, I hope to pass away, looking back with love and tender regret, and thinking, ‘Oh, the pictures I might have made!’”
